Itha Scow Workman - my grandmother
History of Itha Workman has told to her granddaughter Valerie Cooper in 1978.
The Scow family was among the ten families who settled this part of Utah which is Hurricane. Water came to this part to this part of the area in the year 1906 and the Scout family moved here in 1907. Itha was born in a small house in November of 1909. She was the only girl in the family having an older brother Clinton. This town was for home until they moved to Deseret for a few years. She attended high school in the town a few miles away. There was a bus she was supposed to take it was so rundown that they walked most of the time. She moved back to Hurricane sometime after high school where she resided all the rest of her sojourn on earth.
Itha laughed as she remembered some of her earliest childhood experiences. She boldly told me about her being a tomboy while growing up with her brothers. One of her favorite games with marbles because she was the best, even better than the boys, she brags. She and her friends made stilts and used to race with them. They are not like the ones you have now they, because they did not have hands-on. She played much the same type of games that all children play.
Itha remembered seeing hail as big as baseball yes really. Sometime before her mother died she recalls this adventure. She was at the friends house would begin to rain, not big drops, but huge baseballs of hail. It came down so hard that it came down through their home; which frightened them. Itha could not call home because they did not have a telephone, so she stayed there until it was over: about 19 minutes. Her mother and father were worried about her so she ran home with a big hailstone for a souvenir.
As typical of most families the Scows had a pet dog whose name was “Smut”. Itha describes him as a white dog with hair over his eyes so it was impossible to see his face. All the family loved that old rascal. One day while her father was away the sheriff came to collect money for a license for Smut. Itha’s mother did not have any money. She tried to persuade the sheriff to wait until Joe got home because she was sure that he would have money for the license. But he said no. He told the children that he is going to take the dog away and kill him. The kids cried and the dog tried to hide under the stove. But in the end the sheriff got the dog and killed him.
Another pet that Itha recalled was a turtle in fact they had turtles. One of the three was born to one of the other turtles. She remembers tying them to the end of their wagon as they traveled to their dry farm in Arizona. This is where she spent many of her summers. Her pet turtles loved to eat slippery elm, which they picked along the way. Itha still has a couple of the turtle shells in her possession. A long time ago they used the shells for bowls to feed the cats.
